Public Governance, Innovation & Leadership Course
Time: August/ September 2010

Aims and Objectives: The four day program aims to offer the participants new ideas and alternative ways of thinking in the field of governance. The course will contribute towards public sector reforms in Bangladesh and aimed towards capacity building of civil servants and non-state professionals working in the public field to carry out these reforms. During the performance oriented programme the participants can further develop their analytical and practical skills. Preferably, participants should leave the programme with an action plan how to take the learning back to their daily work.
Participants: As social problems are not the sole responsibility for governments to solve, we will work with a mixed group of participants: public servants as well as non-state professionals working in the public field, such as professionals working in private firms or for not-for-profit organizations, civil society representatives, community leaders, social entrepreneurs, professionals working for advocacy groups, academics, and media persons. A mixed group will further enhance the learning experience by sharing experiences and ideas. Ideally, the maximum group size should be around 40 participants, 20 being the minimum.
Course Contents: The course will be, centered around a specific, national topic (such as social security nets in Bangladesh). The Course will focus on a particular government scheme and/or some current cases, to make the programme as concrete as possible and to relate the programme to the daily challenges the participants face in their work. Theory will be lectured and discussed, and serves predominantly to better understand real life cases and challenges. The curriculum will consist of different interrelated themes, such as democratic governance, creating public value, performance management, managing innovation, and adaptive leadership. All classes will make explicit connections to the central topic.
Learning methods: lectures, group discussions, case studies, simulation exercises, small group discussions/study groups, field visit (to an innovative project), and personal action plan. Follow up after the programme to be discussed with IGS, BRACU and the Bangladesh Government.
Faculty : Global Faculty and IGS will put together a faculty team of distinguished academics and practitioners, both international ( Harvard University, University of Virginia, Warwick University and World Bank) and local, who are experts on democratic governance, public management, leadership, innovation, and related fields, and skilled in interactive methods of education.

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME ON ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE
Time: October 2010
Venue: BRAC University/ IGS
Programme Overview: The main purpose of the certificate programme is to sensitize and enhance the capacity of participants on key environmental governance issues related to natural resources and environment management. This programme is designed to provide advanced knowledge on environmental governance and to equip participants with skills necessary to address issues pertinent to Bangladesh. It is expected that the program will enhance their understanding of the issues and sharpen their decision-making capability. The programme also includes a field component course, which will embody theory-based classes which will be followed by a field study where the participants will get an opportunity for experiential learning and test implementation of the tools and techniques concerning EIA, SIA and other pertinent procedures involving environmental governance.
Participants: mid-level public-sector officials, NGO officials and executives from the private sector.
Certificate Programme attributes:
- A three month evening programme
- Target class size: 25
- The course will be taught by in-house faculty, resource persons from other public as well as private universities, University of Manitoba (Canada) and practitioners in the field of natural resource management and environmental governance.

SHORT COURSE ON NEGOTIATION & CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Time: December 2010
Venue: IGS/BRAC University
Programme Overview: The will acquaint participants with the concepts and practice of negotiation and conflict resolution. The programme will introduce participants to the “mutual gains approach to negotiation” and to effective tools for conflict resolution in the public as well as private sector.
Tentative Course Contents:
Concepts of Negotiation, Negotiation and Conflict Management, Mutual Gains Approach to Negotiation, Conflict Resolution Procedures, Communications in Negotiation, etc (case studies, exercises and lectures will used as pedagogy of this programme).
