
Dr. Jalal Alamgir was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Governance Studies (IGS), BRAC University at the time of his sad demise in an accident on 3 December 2011 in Thailand. Jalal was an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and a Fellow of the South Asia Initiative at Harvard University. He has one book and numerous academic articles to his credit. He has published widely in reputed academic journals like the Journal of Democracy, International Studies Review, Asian Survey, the Journal of Contemporary Asia and the Journal of Bangladesh Studies. He also frequently wrote for different newspapers and magazines including the Foreign Policy, Current History, the Nation, China Daily, the Huffington Post and the Daily Star. He was based at IGS since the beginning of 2011. He was working on his planned book on political violence with the assistance of IGS junior researchers. His presentation of the initial research findings of his upcoming book generated much admiration and attention at the IGS Conference titled “40 Years of Bangladesh: Retrospect and Future Prospects.” We feel privileged to publish the following article by Jalal, probably his last Write up.
